postheadericon Guide to Raising a Baby With Down Syndrome Part 2

Now that you have prepared your family and friends for your new little family member, now is the time that you want to prepare yourself for the baby and for caring for the baby. Here are some of the things that will help you.

  • Join a support group for parents who have Down Syndrome babies. You might also want to find one for your other children too if you have other children.
  • Don’t seek opinions from people who don’t have a baby with Down Syndrome. They will not know what to say. That’s why joining a support group is such a good idea. The parents in there know where you’re coming from.
  • When the baby comes, treat the baby like a your son or daughter first and then treat them like a child that has disabilities.
  • Promise yourself that you’re not going to limit what the baby is able to do, no matter how old he or she is.  Give them freedom to reach their full potential.
  • Take some time for yourself. It’s hard enough to take care of a regular baby but when you have a disabled baby it’s a lot harder.
  • Be patient. If you’re not good with being patient, learn to be patience. You’re going to need to be patient with the baby but you’ll also have to be patient with other people and situations you’re going to encounter. There are people who might act cruel and tell you that you made the wrong decision.

Now that you know some things about how you can deal with having a baby that has Down Syndrome, the next part will deal with some things that you may notice about your Down Syndrome baby.

There are a few things that you should know about when you’re getting ready for a baby that has Down Syndrome. When the baby is born, you’re going to notice that the muscles in their body might be floppy and weak. The baby could be more quiet and they may not respond as much, but this is something that is normal for babies that have Down Syndrome.

There are also going to be common physical things that you are going to notice. Here are some of the things that you might notice.

  • A head that’s smaller
  • A face that looks like it’s flat
  • A nose that has a bridge that’s flat
  • A nose that’s low set and not as big as a normal newborn’s
  • Additional skin folds at each eye’s inside corner, close to the nose
  • Rounded cheeks
  • Small and misshapen ears
  • Their eyes will slant upwards
  • He or she has a small mouth which is going to cause his or her tongue to look like it’s big and stick out of their mouth
  • Their hands are small and wide
  • There’s a deep, unusual crease across their palms’ centers
  • Their fifth finger isn’t formed well
  • Their feet soles have creases that are unusual
  • Their big and second toes have wide spaces between them
  • Their joints are extra flexible
  • Their height is shorter than usual

Remember that your baby is going to need a lot of love and nurturing when it’s born and growing.  It’s not going to be easy on anyone in the family, but you are going to find that your child is very loving and affectionate to anyone he or she comes into contact with. Children with Down Syndrome are extremely loving and they enrich the lives of everyone that come into contact with them each and every day.

postheadericon Long-Term Methods of Birth Control

These forms of birth control last for years and are sometimes not reversible. While costing more money upfront, these methods can be the more inexpensive route in the long run because they do not require upkeep or further costs over the years.

The first of these forms of birth control is a vasectomy. A vasectomy is a surgical procedure that blocks the sperm from being passed into the seminal fluid. This procedure has very few side effects, and does not affect sexual drive or ability. This procedure is not considered reversible, although some doctors claim they can reverse it. If you plan on or would like to have children at a later time, you should not consider this means of birth control. Since this procedure is considered permanent, it may be wise to discuss the possibility with your spouse.

Sterilization for women is a procedure that prevents the ovaries from passing an egg through the fallopian tubes, thereby preventing pregnancy. There are several different procedures for this, one of which, called tubal sterilization, is reversible. While tubal sterilization requires surgery, other procedures do not require incisions. Some kinds of this type of birth control are not effective immediately, and may take as long as three to six months to become effective. This type of birth control can effect a woman’s cycle, or can make her premenstrual syndrome worse.

The intrauterine device, called the IUD, is a very common form of long-term birth control that is easily reversed. The IUD is a small, T-shaped piece of plastic that is inserted into the woman’s uterus. Some women also experience discomfort because of the device, but this will usually subside. One type of IUD causes a woman’s period to be longer and heavier than it was previously, while the other type emits a hormone that shortens a woman’s period. The IUD  is a very effective method of birth control, and, while expensive upfront, can last for twelve years. postheadericon Birth Control: Hormonal Methods

While there are many different types of birth control, hormonal methods are one of the most common methods of birth control because they can be extremely easy to use and are very effective. Here are three common forms this type of birth control takes; the birth control pill, the vaginal ring, and the birth control shot.

The birth control pill is by far the most common form of this kind of birth control. It involves taking a pill at the same time of day every day. Through a change in hormone levels, this should restrict a woman’s cycle to a very regular schedule, and, because of the hormone changes, prevent pregnancy by keeping the ovaries from releasing eggs. Because of differences in brands, it can matter greatly if a woman does not take the pill at the same time every day, and can have a variety of side effects.

Another common form of this kind of birth control is the vaginal ring. This requires a little less daily effort, as the ring is inserted into the vagina once a month, and left there for three weeks. It is removed for the fourth week. The ring releases hormones, as the birth control pill does. While having many similar side effects as the pill, the vaginal ring may also increase vaginal discomfort and infection.

The birth control shot is another hormone-releasing form of birth control. This method must be administered only once every three months. Like others, it releases a hormone that prevents the ovaries from releasing eggs. This method typically has the same side effects as others, including nausea, loss of appetite, bleeding, and change in sex drive.

It is important to know your options for birth control and to find one that works for you. Be sure to talk to your doctor if you have any questions or concerns about the type of birth control you are using or would like to use.

postheadericon Birth Control: Natural Methods

Natural forms of birth control are forms that do not require either barriers or hormones. These methods are based on planned abstinence, meaning a couple will not have sex during the woman’s fertile days. This type of birth control is not recommended for women who have irregular periods, periods that are shorter than 26 days or longer than 32 days.

The most common form of this type of birth control is the Standard Day method, which marks days eight through nineteen of every cycle as “fertile days,” when a couple should not have sex. To help women remember which days are safe and which are not, some companies sell “cycle beads,” which have different colored beads for fertile days and infertile days.

There is also another form of this type of birth control, called the Calender Day method. For this method to be most effective, a woman should record her cycle for at least eight months to one year. Once this is done, she uses a formula to calculate her fertile and infertile days. This allows a woman to get a more exact estimate of when she is most likely to be fertile. However, it is slightly less consistent than the Standard Days method.

Other methods of natural birth control, also called natural family planning, use temperature to compute fertility. There are also computer programs that can help a woman to more accurately plot out her cycle.

This form of birth control, if followed correctly, is very effective. However, partners must either have an alternative form of birth control to use on fertile days, or they must have very high self-control. Also, since this form of birth control is very easy to use incorrectly, it is recommended that partners also use another form of birth control, such as spermicide. It is also important the both partners are willing to help with this form of birth control in order for it to be most effective.
